~ WELCOME e-MARGONAUTS :: Greetings from e-Margaux
With Independence Day just around the corner, I decided to delay the
July 1st e-Marginalia Newsletter just long enough to include photographs
of the fireworks. Of course, the days since the holiday have
slipped past quickly and suddenly we’re a week into the month, so
I’m firing this off without further ado.
Before you flip
through the photo gallery, a few thoughts. First of all, let me
warn you that many of these images are rather unusual. Photographing
fireworks is tricky, and although I’ve been experimenting with
capturing the mercurial beauty of fireworks in digital format for
two years now, I’ve still not fully mastered it. Consider these
images to be highly experimental. And if you have some advice to
share, please email me or add
a comment at the end of the gallery.
As for practice, my present location on the Adirondack shores of
Lake Champlain offers a somewhat unique advantage. Westport, NY may
be just a little different from your neck of the woods when things
turn patriotic each summer. Although we enjoy a traditional
Independence Day parade along Main Street on July 4th, a
long-standing tradition dictates that the fireworks display will not
be the same evening.
For many years our small town has maximized the “bang for our
fireworks buck” by celebrating early. And so this year fireworks
were launched from the Lee Park beach located next to the Westport
Marina on July 3rd! That’s right, by enjoying a premature
pyrotechnics extravaganza we are able to stretch our budget by not
competing with all of the towns and cities who insist on a July 4th
fireworks display.
But there’s more! We get to celebrate an Independence Day double
header every year! Since we watch the fireworks early in Westport,
we can jump into our boats on the 4th and head up Lake Champlain to
Basin Harbor or Burlington and watch them all over again. How’s
that for patriotic?
The gallery
showcases photos from both evenings. The first set were taken
from the docks of the Westport Marina where we had enjoyed a
Saturday night bar-b-q at the Galley Restaurant. And the second set
were taken from the deck of a neighbor’s home, looking across the
lake at the Basin Harbor Club. Both evenings’ displays were
impressive, but the photos fail to fully capture the scope and
length.
Here's to stretching our photographic abilities with each and
every opportunity that presents itself! I hope you enjoy
the photo gallery.
Best,
George Davis, e-Marginalia Editor

~ FEATURE STORIES :: Read these Inspiring Travel Stories
Jaisalmer, by Nana Chen
During a
recent trip to India, my friend and I traveled by bus from Bikaner
to Jaisalmer. We had been in Bikaner for only a few hours before
voicing our reservations about getting our feet trampled by rats. It
didn’t matter that they were holy rats from the Karni Mata Temple
in Deshnok, just 30km away. They were still rats.

Terrier Tour of Abruka Island, Estonia, by Amanda Kendle
Abby ran
ahead of us on the dirt track, then looked back impatiently. She sat
down on a grassy patch in between the shallow ruts made by the
island's few cars. When we caught up, she barked a little, then
escorted us on towards our next goal. Abby wasn't ours – just ours
for the day. Her choice.

Dogsledding: An Australian in Maine, by Liz McEachern Hall
New Year’s
resolution # 132: Go dogsledding and quit complaining about the
cold! That’s the brief version of how I ended up in -12F
temperatures, five layers between me and the frostbite, and miles
from any hope of a hot chocolate. Thanks to 11:59 pm, December 31st,
2003, I persuaded (read: conned) my husband and two other Aussie
friends, Cassie and Simon, into taking a weekend trip to Maine to
experience dogsledding.
