e-Marginalia is looking for your string of singing words.
Maybe a certain travel destination triggered the bard in you? A
cascade of splashing verses born of a mosaic in the Alhambra. A
verbal sketch of breakfast tea and technicolor cloth laden
with sun drying raisins in Turpan. Weightless stanzas like so much
champagne powder beneath your snowboard as you surf Portillo's
pistes.
Any travel-inspired poem up to 500 words with good
imagery will be considered. We’re looking for something different,
a fresh perspective in words with rhythm. A snapshot or a
micro-epic. Send us up to five original poems. Good luck to you!
We will showcase nine poems we deem most likely to appeal to
e-Marginalia readers. These will be featured online for one month
during which readers around the world help to choose the most
popular travel poems. And then we announce (and reward) the
winners!
What are we looking
for?
Five hundred (500) words. No more. Less is fine.
Advised, even. We are looking for poems inspired by, and
inspiring, travel. Immersion travel that exudes the rich colors,
smells and tastes of real experience. Do you dare to kidnap
the exotic?
The work we publish targets the adventurous traveler. We serve
people who seek "authentic" travel experiences, voyagers rather
than tourists. Our clients and site visitors marry discerning tastes
and sincere curiosity with a willingness (indeed a need) to venture
beyond the confines of the familiar and the comfortable. Travel
beyond the margin.
Frankly, our site visitors expect to be transported effortlessly
and immediately away from the quotidian and into the magical folds
of a unique adventure. The work we select for publication will meet these important criteria.
Style
Unlike other writing contests we host, the travel poetry
contest does not limit or guide your style in any way. From the
most classical forms to the least restrained free verse, from the
self-conscious to the accidental, from the most polished to the
rawest, we hope to receive and publish a diverse sampling of
inspired and inspiring poems.
Submission
Deadline
Please review the
2006 submission deadlines. You are invited to
submit your work online at any time
prior to this date.
Fees
Reading fees help to offset the expense of running the contest
and enable us to offer higher payouts than our
free contests. You may submit one poem for US$ 3.00, two
poems for US$ 4.00 or five poems for US$ 5.00.
Once you've submitted your poem(s) we will contact you to
confirm receipt and bill you for the appropriate reading fee. You
will be able to pay by check (US and Canadian banks only) or
credit card, echeck or money transfer (secure transaction via
PayPal).
Rewards
e-Margaux.com is a boutique travel
community celebrating and inspiring alternative travel and travelers.
We follow a "contest model" which allows us to encourage excellent
storytelling while rewarding our most popular storytellers. The
poems
selected for publication each quarter are featured (on
e-Marginalia.com and in our monthly
email newsletter) and tracked for two months before being archived.
Tracking the popularity of each story permits us to
reward the writers of the top three most popular
poems according to the schedule below.
First Place - $150.00 maximum ($.05/visit;
$75.00 minimum)
Second Place - $100.00 maximum ($.05/visit; $50.00 minimum)
Third Place - $50.00 maximum ($.05/visit; $25.00 minimum)
Please note that archived poems will remain accessible to site
visitors, but tracking will be discontinued upon publication of the
subsequent issue.
