I recently attended a superb three-day tour of gardens and villas
in Florence organized by the Association Boboli (the name has been
changed to
Hortibus: Collections and Garden Tours) and hosted by Armand
de Foucault (right) and Andrea Ghiottonelli. Our small,
international group was privileged to visit some of the most
spectacular, private gardens and villas in Florence in addition to
the standard "must-sees" like the Villa Medicis Castello
and the Giardino di Boboli. Mr. de Foucault is a charismatic and
diplomatic host, and his enthusiasm (in particular for the
magnificent gardens that he "read" and interpreted for us
like works of literature) resulted in an impressive rhythm over our
three days. And Mr. Ghiottonelli, a proud Florentine, dazzled us
with his encyclopedic command for history, architecture, art,
literature, and just about anything else that could possibly help
illuminate the sites we visited. In short, it was a tour-de-force. I
look forward to joining future tours lead by this dynamic duo. If
you are interested in joining one of Association Boboli's outings,
or if you would like to have them help you create your own
itinerary, check out their
website.
