On my final evening, I enjoyed good, hearty seafood at the
ultracasual
Jasper White's Summer Shack (or
SummerShackRestaurant.com). From oyster bar to lobster, crab and
wood grilled fish, this New England style "fish shack" pumps out a
high volume of good food. Plenty of fresh seafood despite the end of
November date. And, like the first night, good if not outstanding
food was enhanced by exceptional service. The waitress, a young
Indian American – East Indian not Native American (the clarification
begs since The Mohegan Sun is Native American owned,) – was more
energetic than a ten year old on Christmas morning. She was chatty
and lighthearted, sharing her anticipation for an upcoming vacation
on the Florida coast and happily curious about the marine trade
show, and yet she was absolutely attentive and prompt with all
service. A pleasure to be sure.
In short, three dinners are the highlights I take from my time at
The Mohegan Sun. There were plenty of other pleasures including the
generally high level of service (only the long wait for the hotel
shuttle prevents me from claiming 100% consistency) from everyone
working at the casino resort; an impeccable level of cleanliness;
and my large, comfortable accommodations on the twenty seventh floor
with a great view of the lake.
But there were drawbacks as well. The Mohegan Sun is a veritable
world unto itself. For the duration of your stay, you're unlikely to
leave the vast confines of the building. Perhaps in warmer weather
you might venture out of doors to the pool terrace, but you won't
wander far. Successfully achieving the challenge to be an
all-inclusive destination resort also means eliminating all reasons
or means for departing the vast premises. Kitsch and ersatz reality
nimbly elbow aside any experience of the authentic, and an
increasingly narcotic effect prevails as time elapses.
But these may be predictable reactions. The intriguing conundrum
lies in the fact that the mind-numbing delirium induced by almost
three days at The Mohegan Sun was intrinsically coupled with
profound, riveting fascination. I was drawn by a deep, virtually
insatiable curiosity not so much to the trappings of The Mohegan
Sun, but to the diverse cast of characters who populated it. Amid
the hurly-burly and pageantry, I encountered real, remarkable,
memorable people. Perhaps they should be included in the list of
features at
